Rock Art - An out of body experience

In our view Bushmans Kloof is with Jacks Camp one of the two most special places we know in Africa and is certainly a worthy addition to any trip to the Cape area. 

Located in the Whupperthal in the Cederberg mountains, this dry area is fed by the refreshing limpid waters of its own river through the reserve.

Wildflowers and  vegetation

Bushmans Kloof is a South African Natural Heritage Site and forms part of the Cape Floral Region, a proclaimed World Heritage Site.

Bushmans Kloof lies at the northern, arid end of the winter rainfall fynbos biome. Depending on the occurrence of good winter rainfalls, the veld bursts into spectacular flower sometime between July and October. The botanical treasures of Bushmans Kloof include over 755 indigenous plant species spread over three biomes: dry mountain Fynbos, succulent Karoo and mountain forest.

Bushmans Kloof has its own special patch of renosterveld, about four square km in area, tucked away at the eastern boundary of the reserve,  I  where there are clay-types soils

Rock Art

Bushmans Kloof has a very rich collection of rock art with over 300 sites and has its own archaeologist..

Wildlife

Bushmans Kloof nature reserve is home to a diverse combination of desert and mountain wildlife, including the mountain Zebra, Gemsbok, Eland, Bontebok, Red Hartebeest, Grey Rhebok.  The only predator is a very elusive  and rare Cape Leopard that roams among the most remote mountains in the reserve.  As a consequence it is safe to roam the reserve on foot or on mountain bike.
