Affordable Africa

The decline of the US dollar as well as the escalation of costs at high end African lodges has made travel to Africa less affordable than in years past.

Still Africa offers exceptional value.  For the least expensive flights plan your travel during the period September - May, avoiding 5-24 Dec.

Many excellent options remain for safaris and tours in Africa at a rate of $150 - $350 per person per night exclusive of flights.

Here is a short list of idea:

  • Egypt Tours and cruises offer luxury at modest costs.

  • Kenya offers excellent value in safaris.  Tanzania is becoming more expensive, but is still offers good value.

  • South Africa offers many excellent options, particularly if you are willing to hire a car.  Cape Town and the Garden Route offers an exceptionally beautiful and relaxing vacation, with excellent food, wine, and day trips possible.  There are lodges in Kruger that are still affordable, and the Welgevonden Reserve offers excellent value and gameviewing.

  • Botswana overland safaris are still excellent value.

Top end lodges that are still good value:
  • The green season in Botswana (November - March) offers exceptional value at $350-$420 per person per night

  • Zambia, though not cheap is a superb alternative to Botswana. Robin Pope Week in the Peak rates of $460 - $520 pppn are superb value for a top quality safari lodge.

  • Mala Mala Main Camp - Although not cheap, this is probably the best value for money in Africa
